4/1/18 | Meeting Summary

Board Meeting:

We started off by introducing the new board and going over the basic responsibilities of each position. Then, each pair set goals for themselves and their positions for the upcoming year. Ranjay Uncle also said something that the board hopes to enforce this year: the tone we set at the beginning of the year is something that will be carried forward. Moreover, he highlighted that being on time and being present at every meeting is really important. That being said, the Presidents hope that the board really takes that message to heart and that we can all work together this year to be present, on time, and on top of our responsibilities.

General Meeting:

We were extremely thankful to have Dr. Tummala-Narra (Usha Aunty) to give a talk on South Asian children and teens growing up in the US. These kids were all 2nd generation US citizens, meaning their parents live in the US, but moved at some age from a South Asian country. During the presentation Dr. Narra talked about the generation gap between parents and their children, and explained the difference of being a 1st gen South Asian in the US and a 2nd generation person. Along with the generation gap, she talked about the social aspect of growing up as a South Asian by explaining the multitude of social relationships South Asians have with people at school and at home.

After the presentation by Dr. Narra the seniors gave a panel on their college application experience. They answered questions that the group members asked in a survey. Understanding the college process can be very difficult and overwhelming for high schoolers, so we hoped that this would help ease concerns and stress. Key points that they stressed were the importance of starting off highschool strong, taking AP courses while also maintaining a good GPA, and making the essays personal as well as informative.
